Real and Imaginary Depictions of the Orient

A Matter of Gazes

from the 2018-01-11 until the 2018-04-02

When the nineteenth-century painter Eugene Delacroix set off for North Africa, he expected to find primitive societies with backward practices and inferior cultures. What he found instead, were prosperous civilizations with vibrant cultures.

Delacroix was so impressed by the way of life of the people in the Orient that he compared their attitudes and culture with those of the Romans and Greeks in ancient times. His new experience debunked the idea that the Western world held at the time, that Oriental culture was inferior. Delacroix was consequently inspired to produce vibrant paintings from real and imagined scenes, depicting the way of life in the Orient.

Just like in the nineteenth century, racial stereotypes run deep in the contemporary world. The significance of Delacroix's Oriental world in breaking down racist perceptions is something we can and should draw from, in our quest to answer the problem of racism. Consequently, the Lilian Thuram Foundation: Education against Racism has partnered with the Musee Eugene-Delacroix for an interactive exhibition of Delacroix's Oriental art, to explore the question of race and representation in art in the world, past and present.

Organized by:
Françoise Vergès, Dominique de Font-Réaulx and Lilian Thuram.
